Our Skills for Life team are currently looking for volunteers to support our learners in their English and maths classes. Our learners have a wide range of abilities, which means that volunteering is interesting, challenging and rewarding. Sessions are held at the Heaton Centre, Trewhitt Road Heaton and also at Westgate College, on the West Road.

If you would be interested in volunteering, and want to know what it involves, please contact Gill Thompson at the Heaton Centre on 0191 2782822.

New financial support for [...]

mature students 250

There have been changes to how education courses are funded for learners over 24 years old. Level 3 and 4 courses will no longer be funded by the Government but you may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Level Loan to cover your course fees.

If this loan goes on to fund an Access to HE Diploma leading to a completed degree, your 24+ Advanced Learning Loan will be written off so you don't have to pay it back.

It doesn't matter about your household income or even credit checks to qualify for a loan, and you don't have to pay anything back until you are earning over £21,000 a year.

Loans are available for people living in the UK on the first day of their course and have lived in this country, the Channel Islands of the Isle of Man for three years immediately before this.

Applications for loans are already open now for courses starting between 1 August 2014 and 31 July 2015. Talk to our centre reception staff to get more details and your course offer letter which will have the information you will need to complete your loan application.

Find out more about 24+ Advanced Learning Loans.
